J’ai commencé ma carrière de photographe en rejoignant l’agence LFI (London Features International) en 1974. Elle appartenait à John Halsall (pour le côté business) and Mike Putland, un photographe. J’ai appris d’avantage avec Mike en deux semaines que je ne l’ai fait en trois ans à l’Université. Mike était un dieu de la photographie, il a suivi les Stones, les Who, Led Zeppelin sur la route, pour n’en citer que quelques-uns.
Pour moi, la photo rock est ce qui se fait de mieux. Tu es là à photographier des gens animés de tellement de talent et d’énergie. Tu captes toujours quelque chose de réel, qui se révélera souvent à la fois beau et sombre.
J’ai rencontré AC/DC pour la première à Newcastle en Angleterre. On était là pour réaliser une interview avec Angus et Bon, et pour prendre des photos du show et backstage. C’est la seule fois que je les ai croisés, c’était vraiment des types formidables. Ce fut une grande chance de les côtoyer de si près. En 1978, AC/DC, c’était le rock de stade totalement hallucinant. J’avais entendu parler du groupe auparavant, mais c’est après Newcastle que j’ai commencé à acheter leurs disques.
Je me souviens du voyage interminable nous menant vers eux et pourtant lorsque nous sommes arrivés nous nous sommes directement dirigés vers leur hôtel pour une interview. La pièce était complètement enfumée et une odeur de bière y régnait. Même si je crevais d'envie d'en boire une, je ne voulais pas quitter mon appareil photo. La chambre d'hôtel était une chambre tout ce qu'il y a de plus classique avec pour seule lumière deux lampes de chevet. Au niveau photographique, ça se traduit par un déclenchement ralentit et beaucoup de grain au final. On a commencé à 18 heures et on a fini environ une heure plus tard. Le groupe a dû partir pour le concert. Nous avons fait le crochet par notre hôtel avant de rejoindre la salle. Je crevais de faim. Il fallait encore que l'on passe par la porte réservée aux journalistes pour récupérer notre pass backstage afin de finaliser l'interview. Le groupe était déjà dans les starting blocks et bien qu'un espace ait été réservé pour les photographes dans la salle, j'ai dû me battre pour y accéder ce qui a passablement énervé les fans. J'y suis cependant parvenu, rincé, en ayant loupé les trois quarts du show. J'ai juste eu le temps de faire deux bonnes photos d'Angus qui remontait sur scène après s'être baladé dans le public. J'étais bien content qu'il y ait un rappel. Après le show, j'ai rejoint le groupe backstage et l'ambiance était excellente. Beaucoup de rires, d'entrains, de fumée de cigarette et d'alcool. J'ai rejoint notre hôtel vers 1 heure de matin tout ça pour trouver le mini bar vide, le room service fermé, et je n'avais toujours rien mangé. Je devais être debout tôt pour reprendre le train de 7h pour Londres, car j'avais une autre session photo à réaliser (rires).
A l'époque, entre la couleur et le noir et blanc, c'était environ du 50/50. Et techniquement, moi je trouvais qu'il y avait plus de profondeur et de possibilités avec le noir et blanc. Et puis il y avait cette magie de rentrer chez soi et de pouvoir révéler les images dans les bacs en quelques minutes. Alors que la couleur prenait des heures et demandait trop d'artifices.
J’ai rencontré Bon Scott, une fois seulement, ce jour là. Juste pour dire bonjour. Je travaillais et j'étais concentré là dessus. Un chouette gars cela dit, de ce que j'ai pu voir. Quant à Angus, j’ai toujours été impressionné par un individu capable de retourner une salle de milliers de personnes et qui, derrière le rideau, se révélait très terre à terre, presque introverti. C'était le cas d'Angus. Un gars génial. C’est certain, c'est très dur de le photographier. Il n'y avait pas d'autofocus à l'époque. Cela équivaudrait à photographier du sport aujourd'hui mais avec un appareil vieux de 30 ans. Il fallait suivre le gars dans ses mouvements. Un vrai sport en soit ! Beaucoup de ratés mais parfois, des clichés superbes...
D’ailleurs, il n'y a pas de triche avec la photographie. Mes photos parviennent à bien renvoyer l’énergie, la puissance d’AC/DC sur scène ? Hé bien, elles révèlent tout simplement ce qu'ils sont. Ils étaient entièrement dévoués à leur musique et y mettaient, sur scène, toute leur énergie. Et ça se ressent sur les photos. Ce groupe a apporté tant de choses à l’histoire du rock... Je suis un vrai fan, mes trois albums préférés sont Highway To Hell, Back in Black et Black Ice. J'aime l'énergie que ces albums transmettent. Impossible de leur résister.
Côté projets, toujours et encore de nombreux shooting photos. Je viens de lancer un site marchand de mes clichés entre 1978 et 1990 poprockphotos. Et même après. AC/DC y compris ! Et j’ai des centaines de photos d’AC/DC, mais il faut que je fouille (rires).

I remember traveling up on the train thinking shit we’ve got a lot to cover and the train journey is taking forever. When we arrived we went straight to their hotel room for the interview. The room was full of cigarette smoke and the smell beer but I have to wait to have a beer until I can put down my camera and stop working. The room was just another hotel room with only side lamps for light. I shoot editorials with available light which means a slow shutter speeds and lots of film grain. Started at about 6pm and finished about an hour later. The Band left to go to the gig. We went back to our hotel, cleaned up a bit and went off to the venue for the gig. No food I’m fucking starving. As journalists we have to go to the stage door and collect our backstage passes so we could complete the interview. By the time we got in the band were on and in full swing.
Although they had a photographers pit I had to battle my way through the fans that really pissed most of them off. Got to the pit hot sweaty and flustered and had missed ¾ of the show. Just loading my camera when Angus jumped off stage and ran through the photographers pit and back onto stage I just about got a couple of shots off. Lucky they came back for encore. Bit easer getting to the backstage this time. Small little backstage room that the band used before and after the gig. The room was full of talk and laughter; there was a real buzz in the air. Again stank of sweat ,fags and booze but that’s Rock n Roll for you. Got back to our Hotel at about 1ish to find the mini bar was empty and room service was closed and still hadn’t eaten. I had to be on the 7am train back to London for another shoot. Still, thank fuck for breakfast !
What about the Black and White v Colour choice ?
It was about 50 50 at that time. The big difference with black and white was you could push the film much more. Personally I love b/w. After you had shot whatever session you did you would be back in the darkroom printing and watching the results appear in front of you, it was such a buzz. With colour it was transparency and you would spend hours trawling through colour slides on a light box with magnifying glass.
What kind of man Angus was ?
Always impressed with a person that can connect with thousands of people when running around on stage looking like Gods but when you meet them they are just so down to earth. A lovely bloke.
How hard is it to shoot Angus? Does this involve some gear changes?
Very hard. There was no auto focus and I didn’t have a motor drive in those days. It’s like doing sports photography but with slower shutter speeds. So you were follow focusing. Fucking hard work and a bit hit and miss but worth it !
There's always something special out of the AC/DC pictures. Power, energy, rage. How would you explain that ?
Because that’s what they are. They can’t help but to put that across because they are so into what they are doing.

Are you an AC/DC fan? What are your top 3 albums and why ?
Yes, definitely a fan. Highway to Hell, Back in Black and Black Ice. I just love the high energy they give off. Always takes me back to my head banging days.
What are your current projects ?
Loads of shoots! I’ve just set up a selling site from my archive that dates back to 1978 through to the 90’s and beyond. AC/DC included. It will be called poprockphotos and it’s just gone live. Bit of a labour of love. Very affordable images though.
